Our History

The idea of forming a Lodge for former pupils of the Luton Modern School (subsequently Luton Grammar School) was first proposed in the 1940s but the first official discussion took place at a meeting held at the local Rugby Club in November 1954.

A number of brethren were identified as potential Founders and the Lodge was consecrated on 10th September 1955 by the Rt Hon The Earl of Courtown OBE DL, the then Provincial Grand Master, and took place at the Luton Grammas School, in Bradgers Hill Road, Luton.  Nearly 300 brethren attended the Consecration, which was followed by a dinner at the George Hotel.

Subsequent meetings were held at the Luton Masonic Centre in Waller Street until the Centre relocated to its present home at Bowling Green Lane, Luton, in 1996.

The Lodge continued to hold one meeting per year at the Luton Grammar School, by now the Luton Sixth Form College, until 1987, when the September meeting was discontinued.

Initially, it had been a requirement for membership that a brother must have been a pupil at the Luton Modern School, the Luton Grammar School or, subsequently, at the Luton Sixth Form College but by the 1980s, the changes contained within the Education Act, resulting in the closure of the Grammar School had taken effect and the pool of potential candidates was felt to have dried up. The led to a change being agreed in 1989, to allow sons, brothers and fathers of members of the Lodge, who were not former pupils of the school, to join the Lodge and subsequently, in 1993, to allows applications for membership "without restriction".

When and Where Do We Meet

We meet on the third Friday in the months of January, March, May, October and December.  Our October meeting  is our Installation meeting, when the new Officers of the year are appointed and the December meeting is often  as a "White Table", when our partners, members of our families and friends are invited to dine with us after the meeting.

Meetings are now held at the Pavilion in Bowling Green Lane, Luton, LU2 7HR.
